General Health & Safety Class Information

How do I register and pay for a Class?
Registering is easy. Simply register for a class online or call your local Red Cross chapter. Business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. –4:30 p.m., excluding major holidays. If you prefer, complete and return the attached Registration Form via mail or fax. Prepayment of course fee(s) is required, so be sure to have your credit card or other payment information ready when registering.

Course Fees
Health, Safety, and some Youth courses have fees to recover costs associated with the programs. In addition, health and safety course fees support other non-revenue generating programs offered by the Red Cross. The American Red Cross does not receive any government funding.

Will I receive a confirmation--and can I get a receipt?
You can receive a receipt upon request. Confirmation of registration will be emailed if email information is provided. You may call (712) 252-4081 to confirm your registration

Unable to Attend
You can request to transfer to another class. If done before the scheduled class, there is no transfer fee. If transferred after the scheduled class, there will be a $5.00 transfer fee

Refunds
You are eligible for a refund only if a minimum of 2 business days notice is given to the Red Cross office. A $5.00 processing fee will be deducted from all refunds.
No refunds for no-shows, unsuccessfully completing the course, or unused course materials. As a courtesy, businesses are invoiced for class after it is complete. Businesses who register students that do not show up for class will be invoiced for the full cost of the course.

What if I have a respitory ailment or other infection?
If training cannot be postponed, you can call our office ahead of time and request your own manikin. Your manikin will not be used by anyone else until it has been cleaned according to the recommended end-of-class decontamination procedures.

Please request your own manikin if you have:
  • An acute condition, such as a cold, sore throat or cuts and sores on your hands or around your mouth.
  • Tested positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), indicating you are currently infected with the hepatitis B virus.
  • A chronic infection indicated by long-term positive blood tests for HBsAg or a positive blood test for antibodies to HIV, the virus that causes many severe infections including AIDS.
  • A condition that makes you unusually likely to get an infection.
  • Options for Enrollment
Options for Enrollment
Students who are not interested in certification may audit a class. Please note on the registration form if you intend to audit the listed course. Audit enrollees are not required to complete physical and written testing.

Anti-Discrimination Policy
No person will be excluded from service or classes because of race, ethnic origin, religion, handicap, gender or sexual orientation.

Scholarships
No person will be denied services for inability to pay a course fee. Partial or full scholarships are available upon request. The Siouxland Area Chapter will ask scholarship recipients to volunteer time in lieu of payment, if possible.

Can I take a class if I have a medical condition or a special educational need?
We will work with you to accommodate medical conditions or disabilities as much as possible, although certification requirements vary among classes. For more information, or to pre-arrange a class, call the Health and Safety department at (712) 252-4081 or e-mail jean.grove@siouxlandredcross.org.

How actively must I participate in class?
You’ll learn more – and have more fun – by participating as much as possible. Most classes include videos, group discussions and skills practice that requires you to participate in hands-on activities. Since some of the skills practice takes place on the floor, please wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing.
To receive certification, you must attend all class sessions and pass both skills and written testing.

What if I’m late to class?
Since the core of most programs is taught at the beginning of class, you won’t want to miss a minute of class time. In order to maximize training time, session starting times are firm. Late arrivals are admitted at the discretion of the instructor, but tardiness may affect certification. Please be sure to allow enough travel time. If you need directions please call (712) 252-4081 or (800) 340-4081.

Can I transfer or cancel a class?
If you need to transfer or cancel a class, please let us know at least two full working days in advance so we may fill your space. Please be sure to call during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8.30a.m. – 4:30 p.m., excluding major holidays.) We will make every effort to accommodate your request, but refunds and transfers may not be honored if made without sufficient advance notice. A $5.00 processing fee will be assessed for all refunds.

Can lost certificates be replaced?
We can send you replacement certificates for any courses taught in the Siouxland Area Chapter as long as your certification is still valid. Simply provide the course name, location and completion dates when making your request. A $15.00 processing fee will be assessed for each replacement certificate issued.

Can I get sick using a manikin?
CPR training with manikins is a safe and common practice. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there has never been a reported case of any infectious disease transmitted through the use of CPR manikins.
The American Red Cross trains nearly 12 million people annually in lifesaving skills and follows widely accepted guidelines for cleaning and decontaminating training manikins to reduce the risk of disease transmission.
To minimize your risk even further, you should practice good personal hygiene (i.e. frequent hand washing) and follow basic health precautions — especially if you have a condition that would increase the risk of exposure to infection for yourself or other participants.

Class Cancellation
Classes not meeting enrollment requirements may be rescheduled.   The Chapter will contact the registrant at the daytime phone number on the registration form and make arrangements to transfer the registrant to another course. Please be sure to use a daytime number where a message may be left. We cannot be responsible for failure to contact a registrant if the phone number listed does not have a way to leave a message. In case of severe weather, registrants will be called, if possible. Evening class cancellations will be issued by 3 p.m.

Class Size
Class size is limited. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, guaranteed with payment of course fees. A minimum number of students is required for most courses. Classes may be cancelled for low enrollment.

Location of Classes
Please pay close attention to the location of each course as not all classes are held at the Chapter office. Questions regarding the location or time of a course in this schedule can be addressed by calling (712) 252-4081 or (800) 340-4081.
