The Siouxland Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for financial Heroes.

Why do we need financial Heroes? 

The Siouxland Area Chapter of the American Red Cross covers 13 counties including: Cherokee (IA), Monona (IA), Plymouth (IA), Sioux (IA), Woodbury (IA), Dakota (NE), Union (SD), Lyon (IA), Osceola (IA), O’Brien (IA), Buena Vista (IA), Sac (IA), Ida (IA) counties.  In these counties we have provided:
Disaster Services
  • food, clothing, and shelter to 224 people last year who lost their home to a fire.
  • 14 American Red Cross volunteers that recently worked 284 hours to assist the Siouxland District Health Department staff H1N1 clinics in the area.
  • practical work experience for students from both Briar Cliff and Morningside through internships and workstudy positions.
  • shelter operations in Sloan and Onawa where 197 people were stranded from the closure of I-29.
  • shelter operations during ice storms in January for South Sioux City and Sac City for people who lost their power for several days.
  • free Disaster classes for volunteers are available on-line.

Health and Safety Services

  • Last Year more than 13,000 people were trained in CPR, first aid, swim lessons, and lifesaving through the Siouxland Area Chapter.
  • More than 1,600 4-6 year olds learned about germs and essential handwashing skills through the Scrubby Bear program. 
  • 103+ instructors provide CPR/AED and first training at their place of business.
Youth Services
  • The newly formed Club Red Academy includes more than 30 high school and college students from 9 institutions who gather monthly to learn about the Red Cross and develop their community service skills.
  • The Siouxland Chapter has maintained an active youth group since 1917.
  • More than 250 kids completed a day long babysitter’s training program in cooperation with Mercy Medical Center.
  • For more than 15 year the Red Cross has provided Basic Aid Training curriculum to 4th and 5th grade students. Through the program they partner with the IA State Patrol and local fire dept personnel to teach 4th and 5th grade students about fire, internet, and wheels safety.
Service to the Armed Forces
  • Local Red Cross volunteer, RoseMary Jurney, spent more than 175 hours on a cell phone last year to provide emergency communications and support to military personnel and their families.

The Red Cross touches lives in our community each and every day through programs and services such as disaster relief and health and safety training.  As an organization committed to helping the community, the Red Cross is honored to salute individuals who are also making a difference through their actions.
