Thursday, Jan 21, 2010 the Siouxland Area Chapter of the American Red Cross received a call from Ida County Emergency Ed Sohm requesting assistance in the event a shelter was needed for victims of the ice storm that were without power. Sac County Emergency Manager Jim Bullock and Ed made the decision to open a shelter at the Sac County Community Center.
Several Siouxland Chapter volunteers opened the shelter. Bruce Spence, Government Liaison; Paul McGuirk and Steve Wendel, ERV drivers; Vern and Ellen Brice, Mass-Care; Gerry Neuroth and Linda Doran, Shelter supervisors. Donated and purchased food was sent for 50 people. Additional included Staff Garry Coon, Staffing and Ed Porter, Public Affairs. On Friday, Jan 22nd the shelter was closed and 50 cots were kept in Sac City in case anyone needed additional shelter.
Friday, Jan 22nd at the request of Dakota County Emergency Manager Pat Foust a shelter was opened at the First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, Nebr. The Shelter was set up and staffed overnight by Gerry Neuroth and Garry Coon. 600 bottles of water were delivered to the Homer, Nebr. Fire department. The Chapter was also asked to help staff a shelter in Walthill if needed.
Saturday, Jan 23rd at the request of Sac County Sherriff Ken McClurer an additional 150 cots/blankets and a shelter crew were sent to Sac County Community Shelter. Shelter Team Bruce Spence, Linda Doran, Dorothea Bochmann, Paul McGuirk, Keith Peterson, Jim Soukup, Ed Porter, and Maurice Evans. Jill Groge from the Odebolt Nursing Home requested 20 shelter cots which were delivered. The First Lutheran Church Shelter in South Sioux City closed.
