Lifeguard Training
Cost: $135.00 | Length: 32 hrs | 

If you’re 15 or older and looking for a great summer job or a challenging career, American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the best place to start. This course helps you develop skills and experience valued by colleges and future employers. You’ll develop new skills and learn how to deal effectively with people, fostering a “take charge” attitude. You’ll also get a participant’s manual and tips for securing a job as a lifeguard.

Prerequisites:

Must be 15 years of age or older by final day of class:
Must pass pre-course screening on first day of class:

1. Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order:
    • 100 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick,
    • 100 yards of breaststroke, using correct technique (1 breath, 1 pull, 1 kick and a glide),
    • 100 yards either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke.

2. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object. When returning to the starting point, the candidate must:
    • Hold the 10-pound object with both hands,
    • Keep face above the water,
    • 1 minute 40 second time limit

Upon Completion of Class Certificates Issued:
Lifeguard Training & First Aid -  Valid for 3 yrs
CPR for the Professional Rescuer- Valid for 1yr.

Lifeguard Training Instructor Course
Cost: $125.00 | Length: 20 | 
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Instructor training. Students currently possessing an American Red Cross instructor authorization do not need this training. All others should request a self-study to be sent to them for completion prior to the first date of class.
Students must be 17 years of age by last class and be able to successfully pass the written pre-course test as well as a swim test. (See Lifeguard Training swimming requirements)
Students must be able to perform rescue breathing, CPR/AED and first aid skills, as well as correctly complete Lifeguard Training final skills scenarios for an active drowning victim, submerged passive drowning victim and head, neck and back injury scenario.
Certificates received upon completion: Lifeguard Training instructor r.06
Course fee includes: Lifeguard Training Instructor manual, Instructor candidate material
NOTE: The instructor candidate must possess a Lifeguard training participant manual r. 06 and a pocket mask (available for purchase at the Siouxland Area Chapter).

Lifeguard Training Review
Cost: $60.00 | 

To be eligible to participate in the Lifeguard Training Review students must possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid certificate and an American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificate.  Individuals without certificates may not participate in the review course. They may attend a full course or a challenge course. Students should bring a copy of their current certificates to the first class. If needed duplicate certificates may be obtained through the Siouxland Area Chapter for $15/certificate, please allow 1 week for processing. Students will need to satisfactorily complete the lifeguard training prerequisite swimming skills test (see lifeguard training course description for details) during the first class. Students without adequate swimming skills will not be allowed to participate in class and will not receive a refund for the course fee.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
Cost: $135.00 | Length: 32 | 
If you’re at least 16 and a proficient swimmer, you can become an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and teach swimming and water safety courses.
Prerequisites:
  • A Minimum of at least 16 years of age before the end of the course
  • The ability to demonstrate skills that meet at least Level 4 performance criteria during the pre-course session
        Certificates issued upon completion: Water Safety Instructor.
This course is designed to prepare students to teach the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. Participants should be prepared to demonstrate their swimming ability the first night of class. Failure to adequately show competency of basic strokes will result in removal from the course. Refunds are not issued for a participant’s failure to competently perform basic strokes.
